There’s just something about having bubbles in your drink du jour that makes one feel effervescent. First there was Champagne and sparkling wine, then cocktails like the whisky highball and sodas like Coke and Pepsi. For the past decade, however, sparkling water has been all the rage, and it’s a market that’s growing quickly, with an increasing number of sparkling water brands available on the shelves. Think LaCroix (pronounced ‘la croy’), which exploded on the scene last year; the ever-popular Perrier, San Pellegrino, and of course, VOSS.

Unfortunately for many of us, most of the named brands come outrageously priced, and regardless of how attractive their packaging is, one can’t help but wonder how much waste these bottles produce. It’s just not cost-effective, especially if you’re a sparkling water lover.

Cue the entry of SodaStream, a brand renowned for their home-use sparkling water makers. Their newest offering is the SodaStream Spirit, priced at just $179, and it’s their most compact, light-weight entry to date. The Spirit comes with a replaceable CO2 cylinder that makes 60 litres of sparkling water (if you do the math, that’s about $0.43 per litre compared to $3.10 per 750ml for other brands).

Furthermore, the SodaStream maker is a guilt-free option for those who believe in sustainability and going green. You can use any source of clean water – yes, even water right out the tap at home – to produce sparkling water with the Spirit. And if you’re looking for some flavour, they have a whole range of mixers for you to choose from. Examples of flavours are Root Beer, Cola, Lemon Lime, Pink Grapefruit. All of SodaStream’s flavours are low-sugar or sugar-free. Our personal favourite is the Passionfruit Mango mix, which is naturally-flavoured without addition of corn syrup or artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

In the video above, SALT puts the SodaStream Spirit to test. We filled the stylish, minimalist SodaStream bottle up to its marker before inserting it into the machine. SodaStream advises its users to pulse the maker thrice, for up to two seconds each time. If you’re a fan of greater fizz, feel free to pulse it more – just make sure not to overdo it!

We chose the Passionfruit Mango mix to try; the cap of the mix is a measuring cup on its own, so add more if you prefer an intense flavour and less for lighter flavour. Be careful to mix the syrup and fizzy water gently by turning the bottle – don’t shake, or it will cause a veritable eruption upon opening (like what happens if you shake any carbonated liquid).

Finally – what should you do when your SodaStream Spirit runs out of carbonation? Simply take the CO2 cylinder back to your nearest stockist to exchange it for a new one ($26), at almost half the price of a brand new cylinder ($50). SodaStream recycles all your old cylinders to minimise wastage.

Now isn’t that cost-effective, low-calorie and delicious? We’re in love with our SodaStream machine, and we’ve been experimenting with it by creating our own whisky highballs, G&Ts, Mojitos – and we’ve even turned wine into sparkling wine. The possibilities are numerous.
